McFormal

Held every fall, McGlinn’s formal is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Shamrocks put on long dresses and head to the elegant Danke Ballroom on the 7th floor of the Duncan Student Center for a night of dancing, music, and fun. Whether you bring a date or go with friends, it’s a chance to celebrate the semester, dress up, and make lasting memories right on campus.

McMatch

Launched in 2023, McMatch is one of McGlinn’s newest traditions. Each year, McGlinn partners with a lucky male dorm to host a faux wedding, all to raise money for our service partner, St. Adalbert’s Parish. In the weeks leading up to the event, students donate in the name of their favorite Shamrock, and the resident who raises the most is crowned the “bride” and represents McGlinn in the ceremony. With bridesmaids, vows, and a reception to follow, McMatch brings together the community for a great cause in true McGlinn fashion.

Service Events

As much fun as we have within McGlinn, giving back to the South Bend community is just as important to who we are. Throughout the year, McGlinn hosts a variety of service days where residents can volunteer together and make a tangible impact beyond campus. These events are a great way to bond with hallmates while supporting organizations that serve those in need. Last year, Shamrocks volunteered at the South Bend Food Bank, packed meals with Cultivate, and helped out at our service partner, St. Adalbert’s Parish.

Casino Night

No better way to kick off the spring semester than with McGlinn’s signature event! Held every January, this popular fundraiser transforms Danke Ballroom into a casino filled with card games, raffles, and mocktails—welcoming students from across campus for a night of fun and friendly competition. No gambling experience is needed to join in the excitement, and all proceeds go directly to our service partner, St. Adalbert’s School in South Bend. It’s a meaningful and memorable way to reconnect after winter break while supporting a great cause.

S.Y.R

SYR is a classic Notre Dame tradition and one of McGlinn’s favorite spring events. While the name originally stood for “Screw Your Roommate”—a playful nod to the 80s tradition of blind date setups—today’s SYR is all about having fun with friends, dates, or anyone you choose to bring. Each year features a theme, like “Dynamic Duos” or “Rhyme Without Reason,” making it the perfect excuse to get dressed up,  and hit the dance floor.

In  Dorm Events

-

There’s always something happening in McGlinn! Every month, residents gather in the 24-hour lounge for events hosted by our commissioners—ranging from service projects and community bonding to crafts, movie nights, and other activities. These are a great way to unwind, meet new people, and make McGlinn feel even more like home.

Big / Little Program

McGlinn’s Big/Little Program is a beloved tradition that pairs first-year students (“Baby Shamrocks”) with sophomore “Bigs” to help them feel welcomed and supported as they adjust to life at Notre Dame. Participation is optional, and matches are made based on shared interests and vibes. Many Baby Shamrocks also become part of a larger “Sham Fam,” inheriting a GBig (Grand Big) and even a GGBig (Great-Grand Big). While Notre Dame doesn’t have Greek life, this tradition brings the same spirit of mentorship, friendship, and community — all rooted in Shamrock pride.
